Thousands of Bronx kids kept out of charter schools because of cap

Some Bronx students hoping to gain entry into charter schools are being thwarted by laws that limit how many of the privately owned, publicly funded schools are allowed to open.Existing laws allow 100 charter schools to operate in New York City. Eight slots are open, but according to a Daily News report, those spaces are not operational because the schools in question were either closed or didn?t open.A legislative debate to increase the number of charter schools allowed to operate is underway. Opponents of charter schools say they divert resources from public school students.
