Parents of fatally shot BX teen want tougher illegal gun laws
The parents of a Bronx teen, who was fatally shot in May, are teaming up with a gun control advocate to push for tougher illegal gun laws.
The parents of Samantha Guzman say her death changed their lives forever. Police say Guzman, 18, was shot and killed while walking to a bus stop. Now, the teen?s parents are calling for tougher penalties for those with illegal guns. Gun control advocate Gloria Cruz says police need to find out how illegal guns are getting into people?s hands.
According to the district attorney?s office, those sentenced with possession of a gun on the street are supposed to serve at least one year in prison but the court exempts 40 percent from that sentence. Cruz says this is unacceptable to the parents of Guzman as well as other families who have lost loved ones.
Meanwhile, Guzman?s killer has yet to be found. Her parents say there is an $18,000 reward for anyone with information leading to an arrest.
