Pedestrians dart through dangerous traffic at Bronx intersection
Pedestrians complain crossing the intersection of University Avenue and 181st Street is like navigating an obstacle course, and their lives are at stake.
A student at nearby Bronx Community College says the area spans nearly a block and has a series of three traffic lights, making it confusing. Advocacy group Transportation Alternatives calls the intersection one of the five most dangerous in the borough. Residents say speeding drivers only add to the problem.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) has installed plastic dividers to narrow the lanes and slow traffic, but pedestrians say they would like to see a concrete median there. The DOT did not respond to numerous calls for comment.
