Garbage truck plows into cars on Bronx road, knocks down power lines

A garbage truck sent several people to the hospital Saturday when it slammed into numerous cars and knocked down power lines on West Kingsbridge Road and Heath Avenue.

Witnesses say they were frightened after the truck hit eight cars because live power lines came loose. The power lines trapped passengers inside their cars until police and Con Edison workers arrived. Police say the accident, which occurred around 5 p.m., was caused by mechanical failure. No criminal charges will be filed against the driver.

More than 15 people sustained minor injuries, while seven were sent to the hospital. Residents claim accidents happen almost weekly on West Kingsbridge Road and they will ask the city to install speed bumps to slow down traffic.

Con Edison reports all power outages were restored by Sunday morning.
