Court orders state to pony up billions for BX, city schools
The Campaign for Fiscal Equity (CFE) says it?s pleased by Monday?s court ruling on additional funding for Bronx and city public schools, even though it wanted more money.
The state?s highest court ordered New York to pay at least $1.93 billion more each year for city school education aid. The CFE lawyer who handled the case says although that amount is billions less than the amount the CFE was seeking, he is pleased with the decision.
CFE officials say they are satisfied that the Court of Appeals has required state leaders and lawmakers to fix the financial problems of city schools. According to the CFE, some of those problems include crumbling buildings, too few laboratories and lower paid, uncertified teachers.
