City claims it's safer for BX kids to get to class

New York City says it's making it safer for Bronx students to get to school. The Department of Transportation says traffic fatalities are at an all-time low, but safety enhancements around Bronx schools are still a top priority. The DOT looked at elementary and middle schools in the Bronx and the rest of the city as part of its Safe Routes to School study. One school identified as needing more safety enhancements was PS 21. Mayor Bloomberg (R-NYC) approved the recommendations, which include new parking signs, traffic safety signs and stop signs. Eight-year-old Jordan Butler says the traffic light at the intersection of East 226th Street and White Plains Road has helped him get to school safely. The Department of Transportation plans to launch a similar program for Bronx high schools in 2007.
