Bronx bodegas go healthy
The next time you head over to the local bodega, you might be able to pick up some fruit and vegetables with your beer and Lotto tickets. Starting on Friday, more than 60 bodegas in the south Bronx and Harlem will offer healthier products in addition to its standard items. The stores taking part will get free shipments of fresh and ready-to-eat apples and carrots. For just 50 cents, one can buy a package of carrots or an apple. The program is part of the city's Move to Fruits and Vegetables campaign. A recent study claimed that bodegas are the most common food stores in the area, but many did not offer healthy items because of cost issues.
