DWI crackdown leads to increase in arrests, fewer deaths in BX, city

The New York Police Department?s latest DWI crackdown has reportedly resulted in fewer deaths and more arrests in the Bronx and city.According to a Daily News report, 10,000 people were arrested citywide this year for driving while intoxicated. Arrests jumped by 91 percent in the Morrisania section of the borough. Officials say a NYPD initiative called Traffic Stat, aimed at reducing traffic accidents, prompted the spike in arrests. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly says DWI checkpoints will be set up across the city on Christmas and New Year?s to crackdown on impaired drivers.
