Environmentally friendly Fordham library boasts big energy savings

A new library in Fordham has garnered national attention as the Bronx's first energy-efficient, "green" public building.
The U.S. Green Building Council awarded a plaque to the Bronx Library Center on East Kingsbridge Road. Factors such as building materials and energy efficiency were evaluated. The architect, Daniel Heuberger, used recycled materials in the floors and carpets and cut out potentially harmful resins typically found in finished wood. The building also boasts large windows, which allow for maximum use of natural light. Heuberger believes the city will see a positive impact once more environmentally friendly buildings are built.
The mayor's office say the library is 20 percent more efficient than similar structures. According to city law, all public buildings now have to be built "green."
