Students become young heroes as city, BX remember Martin Luther King Jr.
As residents in the Bronx and the rest of the city remembered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., 200 students from the Bronx and East Harlem were sworn in Monday as City Year Young Heroes. The ceremony kicks off 15 weeks of community service and service learning on Saturdays for the students in sixth through eighth-grades. Mayor Bloomberg's (R-NYC) office says the philosophy of this year's program represents King's belief that everyone has the power to serve their communities and make a difference, regardless of age.The volunteers will participate in a public art project called "Garden in Transit." They will paint large, colorful flowers on self-adhesive material that will be displayed on yellow cabs this fall. The cabs will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of New York's first motorized taxi. The program is supported by a $1 million sponsorship from the Bank of America.
