FDNY to add more training for new recruits
The Fire Department of New York is changing the training for new recruits after the deaths of several firefighters. The FDNY will be adding 10 more weeks of training for a total of 23 weeks. The department says the 10 weeks will focus on how a building is constructed, what its layout will be and what to expect once inside.Assistant Chief Thomas Galvin says that the majority of the last 25 firefighter deaths were related to unexpected structural issues. He said some home owners divide larger rooms into separate apartments, blocking access to the fire escape. The department says another reason for extending the training was the FDNY's lowered application requirements.
