Group says program to help disabled welfare recipients in city, BX is a mess
A new report claims a multi-million dollar city program meant to help disabled welfare recipients in the Bronx and the rest of the city is failing. The goal of WeCare is to help the 45,000 disabled city residents who receive welfare to find jobs that accommodate their needs. A New York Times report, however, says the opposite is true after a survey of more than 700 participants.Community Voices Heard claims the program is lacking the supportive and individualized services needed. The Vocational Rehabilitation Program is meant to show participants how to write resumes and sharpen their computer skills. The group claims they found people playing cards and doing puzzles. The study also says that 69 percent of those assigned temporary jobs did not feel the positions accommodated their needs.A spokesman for the city's Human Resources Administration declined to comment.
