Less than one week after auxiliary officers were shot to death in Greenwich Village, the NYPD is reviewing its policies for volunteer officers.The NYPD has created a committee to review how the volunteer police officers are recruited and trained. The committee will also look at how well the officers are equipped, deployed and supervised. Currently, they carry nightsticks and handcuffs but are unarmed. The review will be done by a panel that will include the commanding officer of the auxiliary police and veteran volunteer police officers. State Sen. Carl Kruger (D-Brooklyn) has requested that the NYPD supply all volunteer officers with bulletproof vests.Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the panel will report on its recommendations within 90 days.
