City set to close Rodman's Neck firing range

After years of controversy, the city announced it would close the Rodman's Neck police training facility.

City Island residents said they have complained for more than 10 years about noise coming from the firing range at the facility. Residents said the gunshots distracted them from their daily activities and disturbed their sleep at night. After a long wait, city officials said the Rodman's Neck site would be closed after a new police academy, which is scheduled to break ground in Queens in 2009, is completed.

Community Board 10 said it hasn't received anything official, but the city will likely return the land to the parks department.
