DOE fields tough questions on school bus safety
Bronx and city students are not safe on school buses, according to a City Council panel.
Department of Education officials were questioned Wednesday at a hearing after council members say parents flooded them with correspondence about the issue. A parent recently complained her non-speaking daughter was abused while on the bus. Other parents complained about alleged sexual abuse on school buses. Critics of the DOE's current bus system are calling for cameras and monitors on every school bus.
The DOE plans to overhaul the office that manages the bus system and add more bus inspectors. The DOE estimates it would cost about $100 million to install cameras on all buses.
