Stepinac, Xaverian still in baseball race

Archbishop Stepinac High School and Xaverian High School advanced in the Catholic League baseball playoffs after stiff competition in their qualifying rounds.

Cardinal Hayes High School took an early lead during game three against Stepinac. In the bottom of the first inning, Hayes' O'Brien Rivera sent the ball into centerfield, bringing in Kenny Espinal. Hayes built added more runs to extend their lead to 3-0. Stepinac rallied, scoring five unanswered runs. Stepinac finished off Hayes on Memorial Day with a 5-3 victory.

Fordham Prep got off to a rocky start in game three against Xaverian. Fordham starter Ryan Paul walked the bases loaded in the first inning. Xaverian batter A.J. Passione then smacked a grand slam, putting Xaverian up 4-0. Fordham never recovered and Xaverian went on to win 12-1.

Xaverian and Stepinac both advanced to the quarterfinals with the wins.
