City, BX set to see more teachers, classrooms

The Department of Education is planning to add more teachers for schools in the Bronx and the rest of the city. The move is part of a plan to reduce class sizes across the city. The plan is thanks to an additional $700 million from the state for education. Officials from the Department of Education will seek input from each borough before committing to a final plan.According to the New York Sun, $106 million will be dedicated to hiring 1,300 teachers and $66 million will focus on reducing class sizes. The report also states that $57 million will go towards extended-day programs and almost $13 million will be used to restructure middle schools and high schools.Advocacy groups have criticized the plan, claiming it is too modest and that class sizes will still be too large.
