The founder of a Bronx community group may face deportation charges after he was arrested on a New York City-bound train Friday.
Victor Toro, 65, was arrested by immigration officials during a routine check of rail passengers in Rochester. He was released Monday after posting bail. Toro, who escaped persecution in Chile about 20 years ago, was charged with illegal entry into the United States and with residing illegally in the country.
Toro, who is the founder of the La Pena del Bronx group, admits he never pursued U.S. citizenship. His attorney said he would seek asylum for his client.
