NYC ID card supporters take fight to City Hall

A lawmaker voiced support Thursday on the steps of City Hall for an identification card for all New Yorkers ? regardless of immigration status.
State Sen. Ruben Diaz and the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization are backing legislation calling for ID cards. Diaz said the cards are needed to assist people who cannot legally obtain state identification.
The senator said he believes identification cards will improve banking services for immigrants, help them gain employment and ensure access to city services.
The lawmaker said the legislation promotes the spirit of Executive Order 41, issued in 2003. Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued the order, which is meant to protect immigrants' rights. The order encourages immigrants to seek assistance without fear of being deported.
