Arts and science in Bronx schools get a makeover
When Bronx students head back to school next week, they can expect a new emphasis on arts and sciences in the curriculum.
New York City?s Department of Education says art will be used to measure accountability schools evaluations and principals? job performance. New testing in the arts will include high school exit exams in music, drama and dance. Those who pass and have completed the appropriate courses will graduate with arts-endorsed Regents honors diplomas.
Science is also getting more attention beginning in the fall. Schools will conduct assessments in science subjects to track progress, keep parents informed and to ensure students meet standards. Grades 3 and 6 will take citywide science tests. Grades 5 and 7 will be tested next year.
The DOE says it will come out with annual reports assessing arts and science in each school and across the city.
