BX Labor Day weekend crash raises safety concerns
Some Bronx residents are demanding the Department of Transportation make safety changes to an intersection where four people died over Labor Day weekend.
The victims were killed in a crash at E. Tremont and Rosedale avenues around 4 a.m. Saturday. Police identified the driver as Maymond Baba and the passengers as Luis Matias and Frank Cuevas. Authorities have yet to identify a 26-year-old woman who was also in the SUV.
Investigators are still probing the crash, but say the SUV's roof was somehow peeled back when the vehicle hit a curb then a utility pole. One of the victims was decapitated in the crash and others were ejected. Witnesses claim the SUV was speeding.
People continue to visit the site, where a makeshift memorial sits for the victims, some of whom worked for Con Edison. Some residents want the DOT to add additional signs and traffic lights, saying too many roads merge at the intersection.
The DOT says it is deciding whether changes need to be made.
