Parents complain Bronx school stinks -- literally

Parents whose children attend a Webster Avenue school complain a foul smell may be endangering students' health.
Parents describe the odor near P.S./M.S. 20 as a mix of raw sewage, garbage and a dirty bathroom. They say the smell, which has been present since the first day of school, may pose a health risk to children who play outside during recess.
The Department of Education maintains it is working to ensure the smell, from a sewer drain, completely dissipates. "The school became aware of the problem with the smell last week and immediately fixed the trap so that the smell would not collect in the area," the DOE said in a statement.A sergeant from the 52nd Precinct, which is located next to the school, said the smell is not specific to P.S./M.S. 20. She said the odor has been wafting through the neighborhood for years, and she feels the city has failed to address the problem.
