Thousands walk in the Bronx to cure juvenile diabetes
Thousands of Bronx residents walked to help in the fight against juvenile diabetes Sunday.
The purpose of the walk, organized by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, is to bring attention to a disease that affects not just the child but also the entire family.
Sonya Miller, one of the walkers, participated to support her 11-year-old daughter Alexis who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes two years ago.
?It changes your life forever. It?s like you stop living to take care of your child,? Miller said.
Miller?s daughter had a team of supporters walking with her, including teachers, nurses and school security guards.
Participants said parents must stay proactive in protecting their children. They advise working closely with their children?s doctors and getting their children tested for the disease.
Parents of diabetic children said the best part of Sunday?s event is that their children got the chance to meet other kids who suffer from the disease.
Organizers said their goal for the event was to raise $350,000.
