Dozens of tenants at a Melrose public housing complex picked up signs and bullhorns Thursday to protest budget cuts.
The St. Mary's Park tenants are part of a group called Mothers On The Move. Members of the Teamsters Local 237 and the group Neighbors Empowering Neighbors joined the women to demand full funding for the New York City Housing Authority.
Tenants are demanding the City Council include $30 million annually for operating costs. In the meantime, they want the city to infuse the agency with $30 million in October.
The group fears budget cuts are looming as the NYCHA continues to operate in the red. Tenants say cutting the budget to get in the black would only result in poor building maintenance and NYCHA job layoffs.The protesters also took their fight to City Hall.
