More public school students are spending time in jail than after-school programs, according to a report released Sunday.
Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrión Jr., flanked by about 100 students, announced results of his study on the steps of City Hall. The borough president's staff used NYPD data to compile the report.
According to the study, police arrested 52,571 youths between the ages of 13 and 19 in 2006 compared to 44,148 in 2002 ? a 20 percent jump. School arrests rose to 4,842 in 2006 from 4,198 in 2002.
The study also found there were 3,354 harassment incidents, 208 sex assaults and 83 bomb threats in city schools in 2006.
Carrión blamed the New York City Department of Education and Youth and Community Development Department for not providing adequate after-school and youth programs.
