Girardi steps up to plate to manage Yankees
Joe Girardi has accepted a three-year, $7.5 million deal to replace Joe Torre as the next Yankees skipper.
Girardi, 43, was with the Bombers as a catcher when the team won three World Series championships from 1996 to 1999. He later worked as a Yankees bench coach in 2005.
Girardi went on to manage the Florida Marlins in 2006. He kept the league's lowest-paid team in playoff contention until the final week of the regular season, earning him the National League Manager of the Year award.
Florida owner Jeffrey Loria and General Manager Larry Beinfest fired the coach after just one season when he felt out of favor with them.
Girardi spent the past season as a broadcaster for the YES Network and FOX.
