A new Department of Education report shows the city is gaining ground in its five-year plan to stop classes from busting at the seams.
According to the DOE, several schools participating in a special program to reduce the number of students in the classroom have been successful. The DOE wants to add more schools to the program.
J.H.S. 123 Principal Virginia Connelly plans to take the plan further by shifting some DOE funds to the hiring of new teachers. Connelly hopes to cut classroom sizes in half so students can receive more one-on-one attention.
The DOE claims the study contains the most detailed class size information to date. The study includes the total number of students in each school in each grade and other information.
