Education coalition launches anti-budget cut campaign
The United Federation of Teachers announced the formation of a new coalition Sunday that will fight against possible budget cuts that could cost New York City schools hundreds of millions of dollars.
Elected officials and education advocates have named the group the "Keep the Promises Coalition." The group is fighting against state and city budget proposals that could cut $700 million worth of funding for city education.
Education officials say the cuts could affect after-school and weekend programs, as well as hurt efforts to reduce class sizes.
Coalition representatives say the group will continue to work with all levels of government to ensure the protection of the city's children. The final budget is due April 1.
