More Bronx classrooms top back-to-school wish list
Holding signs and chanting, students and other protesters stood on the steps of City Hall Thursday with one request before the start of the school year: more classrooms.
Groups, such as the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition, say Bronx schools are almost maxed out at 96 percent capacity. Elected officials and educators also feel that borough schools are in dire need of libraries and computer labs.
Students agree that they are doing more with less, leaving them to lose out on a good education.
"We can't do extracurricular activities ? nothing. We're sweating because there are too many kids in our classroom," says student Grace Mercado.
Protesters say they hope the Department of Education and School Construction Authority will restore 1,703 planned classroom seats that were lost in the last capital improvement plan.
