Scholarship fund helps Bronx students in need
A nonprofit organization is promoting a scholarship fund to help low-income students in the Bronx further their education.
Officials with the Inner-City Scholarship Fund say about 5,000 of the borough?s pupils have been helped by the fund. Once an application has been accepted, the program covers tuition every year until the student graduates.
?I see parents coming in with rolled-up coins to make payments for tuition,? says Lenora Yzaguirre, principal of the private Christ the King School at 1345 Grand Concourse. ?I know how hard it is. They live paycheck to paycheck.?
Grace Deleeuw?s son, sixth-grader Joseph Deleeuw, attends Christ the King. The family has been assisted by the scholarship fund.
?I?m very grateful, and there?re words I cannot express,? says Grace.
By most accounts, the program has proven to be a success. Ninety-eight percent of the students the fund has helped graduate high school, with 96 percent of those students enrolling in college.
