New housing built in BX for victims of domestic abuse
A new housing complex designed as a safe haven for victims of domestic violence will soon be unveiled in the Bronx.
Owners say the nine-story Marcello Manor complex will offer affordable and eco-friendly housing to abused women and children who otherwise might have ended up on the street.
?Domestic violence is one of the leading causes of homelessness, and we're glad to be part of this project,? says Dan Magidson, of Enterprise Community Investments.
The building has 38 units that include energy-efficient features, a community space and a secure outdoor courtyard for residents. In addition, the complex will have on-site special services for tenants, including a full-time case manager and a part-time recreation specialist.
?What we're trying to do is providing stability for families and help them toward the healing process,? says Carolyn Corden, of New Destiny Housing Corp.
Half of the available apartments will be set aside for low-income domestic violence victims, while the rest of the units will be offered to low-income working families.
According to the owners of the complex, the tenants of Marcello Manor were chosen through a lottery system. The first residents will be moving into their new apartments beginning next month.
