Survey: Bronx hungriest borough of NYC
A new survey released by the New York City Coalition Against Hunger shows the Bronx holds the top spot for the worst hunger problem in New York City, with a growing number of residents struggling to feed their families.
According to the study, 88 percent of local soup kitchens and food pantries have seen an increase in the number of people asking for assistance, and more than 70 percent of agencies in the Bronx say they do not have enough food to keep up with the growing demand.
Anthony Jordan, executive director of St. Benedict the Moor Center, says for the first time since the pantry opened two years ago, he has to turn families away.
"I'm very grateful for the bag of groceries I got, however, for a mother of two kids, this is absolutely not enough," says Felicia Millman, of the Bronx. "I'm going to call the government and ask them to allocate more funds to churches and organizations like this because we need help out here."
Executive Director of NYC Coalition Against Hunger Joel Berg says it would cost about $800 million a year to end hunger in New York City, which far exceeds the financial resources of any charity.
"That's why we really need the federal government to step up to the plate," Berg says.
