Police shoot man they say wouldn't drop his bat
Police say a Bedford Park man was fatally shot by an officer after he refused to drop a baseball bat Tuesday night.
Police say they arrived at 2710 Bainbridge Ave. after receiving reports of an altercation involving a firearm. Instead, they say they found a man wielding a baseball bat. The officers repeatedly ordered the man to put the bat down, but when he allegedly refused, one of the officers fired a single shot and hit the man in the chest.
The victim?s wife, however, claims the officers gave her husband only one order and then opened fire. The couple?s stepdaughter says her stepfather had a bat in his hands because some men were harassing her, and he sought to protect his family.
Police officers involved in the shooting were taken to Jacobi Medical Center to be treated for trauma. The New York Police Department is investigating the incident.
