A recent study shows the chance of getting killed in a traffic accident in the Bronx is disproportionately higher for people ages 65 and older than for younger people.
In a three-year period, the Tri-State Transportation Campaign found that 63 pedestrians had been killed on Bronx streets. More than a quarter of the victims were senior citizens.
According to the study, the four deadliest roads in the borough are East Gun Hill Road, Broadway and Grand Concourse. A total of five people were killed on Gun Hill Road between 2005 and 2007.
In wake of the alarming statistics, the city is making efforts to improve pedestrian safety for elderly residents by increasing pedestrian crossing times at crosswalks.
