Lawmakers want federal help for Hunts Point Market
Some lawmakers are pushing for the federal government to add the Hunts Point Market to its economic stimulus package.
Local leaders say the market is a vital part of the Bronx and one of the largest food distribution centers in the world. They say if the government is bailing companies out, then it should also build up places like the market.
According to lawmakers, the produce section of the market needs help, such as new facilities. They say if the facilities were better, it could create new jobs and keep business in the borough, as well as boost the economy.
The city comptroller says his next move is to send letters to the current administration in Washington and continue the fight to have Hunts Point Market included as part of the stimulus package when the Obama administration steps in.
