Gas leak forces residents out of Nelson Ave. homes
A gas leak on Nelson Avenue forced dozens of people out of their homes and children out of a nearby school Wednesday morning.
Firefighters broke down doors to evacuate residents on Nelson Avenue near 174th Street after high levels of gas were detected in the air. The firefighters also evacuated children from P.S. 204 to a nearby school. Many residents sought shelter inside MTA buses and shops in the area.
Crews worked tirelessly to determine the exact spot where the gas was seeping from. They used equipment that reads the levels of carbon monoxide in the air, but were unable to immediately uncover the source of the leak.
Resident were allowed back into their homes Wednesday evening. The FDNY has yet to determine the cause and source of the leak.
