Police were able to negotiate the release of two female hostages from a Bronx apartment after five hours Friday.

The two women were being held inside an apartment on Melrose Avenue and East 158th Street. Police took Kirkland Smith, 47, into custody for allegedly refusing to let the women leave the apartment.

Smith was allegedly armed with knives. Police say the hostages were Smith's girlfriend and a neighbor.
