Verdict expected in 'Black Sunday' trial
Two tenants accused of causing the deaths of two firefighters during a 2005 blaze will learn their fate from a jury Friday.The jury reached verdicts Wednesday on the charges facing Rafael Castillo and Caridad Coste.Prosecutors claimed Castillo and Coste erected illegal partitions inside their apartments that blocked the fire escape. Because of that, prosecutors say Lt. Curtis Meyran and firefighter John Bellew were forced to jump four stories to their deaths.Castillo and Coste face charges including including manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and reckless endangerment. The owner of the building and the landlord are facing the same charges in a separate trial.
