A brush fire broke out in Van Cortlandt Park Friday morning, scorching one acre of meadowland before it was put out by firefighters.
Officials say the fire started at around 9:30 a.m. in the northwestern section of the park and burned steadily for nearly an hour. No one was hurt and no structures were threatened.
Eyewitness James Daniel Parker says the area was enveloped in heavy black smoke, and soot could be seen falling onto cars.
Several dozen firefighters from 12 fire departments were forced to carry their hoses for one quarter of a mile downhill to reach the area consumed by flames.
According to officials, the fire may have resulted from dry weather conditions. However, the exact cause of the brush fire is still under investigation.
