Bronx residents elected former Assemblyman Ruben Diaz Jr. as borough president Tuesday.
Diaz, a Democrat, defeated Anthony Ribustello, who is a Republican district leader, 87 percent to 13 percent. Diaz has served in the Assembly for 12 years.
The position was left vacant in March after Adolfo Carrion Jr. was offered the job of urban affairs director with the Obama administration.
The Board of Elections opened 215 polling sites Tuesday, manned by thousands of workers. Poll workers say the voter turnout was less than originally expected.
Diaz says he will focus on issues like job creation, keeping Bronx streets safe and clean and improving the education system.
