Bronx senator pushes for sex offender alerts
A Bronx state senator has proposed legislation to set up an e-mail alert system to inform residents when a registered sex offender moves into the neighborhood.
State Sen. Jeff Klein (D) says the statewide communication system could be used to keep children in the Bronx safe by alerting their parents if sex offenders are among their neighbors. Klein believes the e-mail notifications would be an easy extension of the NY Alert system already in place for emergency communication.
Residents say they support the idea to protect their children and maintain their communities. Data has revealed that, of the 3,400 sex offenders living in New York City, 928 of them reside in the Bronx.
Klein says the legislation has already passed the Corrections Committee. The state Senate will vote on the proposal Monday.
