Thompson to face Bloomberg in November
City Comptroller William Thompson Jr. easily defeated fellow Democrat Tony Avella and will face Mayor Michael Bloomberg in November's mayoral election.
Bloomberg wasn?t in Tuesday?s primaries, but he held a rally with supporters in New York City anyway. The mayor didn't mention Thompson by name, but tried to cast him as a return to politics as usual, someone who comes from a political machine run by party bosses and special interests.
In the Democratic race for public advocate, City Councilman Bill de Blasio and former Public Advocate Mark Green are headed for a runoff.
With 99 percent of precincts reporting, de Blasio had about 32.5 percent of the vote compared to 31 percent for Green.
If neither candidate gets 40 percent, there will be a runoff in two weeks on Sept. 29.
