Bloomberg cuts FDNY units to 4 firefighters

FDNY firefighters are facing another round of cutbacks Tuesday after Mayor Michael Bloomberg temporarily cut squads down.

Bloomberg says the cuts will not change the FDNY's response time. The five-firefighter units that normally ride in each engine will be cut down to four, which will save the city millions of dollars.

The president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association says the cuts put New Yorkers at risk and reduce the units' effectiveness.

Officials say the cuts were made possible by a contractual agreement that says once more than 7.5 percent of the FDNY staff is on medical leave, the city can reduce the units by one firefighter.
