MTA proposes subway, bus cuts to close gap

(AP) - New York City transit officials have proposedcutting subway lines, dozens of bus routes and student discounts totry and close a budget gap of nearly $400 million.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority board's financecommittee made the recommendations on Monday. The full MTA boardwill meet Wednesday to vote on the budget.

The MTA has pledged not to raise fares next year. It revived theproposed service cuts after the state cut aid it had pledged monthsago.

The proposed cuts would eliminate two subway lines, run fewersubways and buses late at night and on the weekends and cut severalbus routes.
