Plan to ax kids' MetroCards gets sharp response
The MTA's plan to eliminate free MetroCards for students is drawing fierce opposition from the kids who use them.
Students have begun a protest page on Facebook that more than 40,000 have joined and are also planning a rally Monday outside the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's headquarters.
In the past, New York State would kick in $45 million a year to fund the student MetroCard. When the state, which is also in a fiscal tailspin, was only able to give $25 million, the MTA adopted a budget that would phase out the program.
