DEP to tear up roadway for new water main

Beginning in late February, the Department of Environmental Protection will tear up miles of roadway in the Bronx to install an underground water main.

The DEP will install the 6-inch pipe under a 7-mile stretch of Bainbridge Avenue as part of the Croton Water Filtration Project.

Water waste will be transferred from the filtration plant in Van Cortlandt Park to the treatment plant in Hunts Point along the new pipeline. The city says it plans to close half of the street for the construction, which is expected to be completed by March 2011.
