Community Board fights homeless shelter plans

Leaders of Community Board 12 are fighting to ensure that empty space left by a military reserve center isn't used by a city homeless facility.

The board says the former Joseph Muller U.S. Reserve Center building on East 238th Street has lead paint and asbestos, making it unfit for a shelter. The community is also arguing that it isn't equipped to support a social service center, which they say could disrupt the neighborhood's quality of life.

For now, the community board agreed to have military reserves from the Kingsbridge Armory occupy the space.
