Judge orders FDNY hiring reform

A judge ruled Thursday that the New York City Fire Department must revamp its hiring practices because they are discriminatory.

U.S. District Court Judge Nicholas Garaufis ruled that the city must ?develop a new testing procedure for the position of entry-level firefighter.? About 7,400 minority applicants are eligible to file claims against the city for discrimination during hiring procedures, the ruling added.

Fire department officials said there is no evidence to show that the department intentionally discriminated against black people. The FDNY currently has about 350 black firefighters out of 11,500 total.
