Federal prosecutors charge NYC councilman
(AP) - Federal prosecutors say a New York City councilman has surrendered to face charges in a public corruptionprobe.
A Manhattan indictment was announced Tuesday against CouncilmanLarry Seabrook. The Democrat has represented a Bronx councildistrict since 2002. He also is a former state senator.
Charges against Seabrook include receiving corrupt payments,extortion and money laundering.
In recent years, federal authorities and the city's Departmentof Investigation have been looking into how council members funnelmoney to nonprofits.
Prosecutors alleged that from 2002 through 2009, Seabrook triedto direct at least $2.5 million of council discretionary funds tonon-profit organizations that he actually controlled.
His lawyer did not immediately return a call for comment.Subway closures cause a headache for Bronx commuters.
