Bronx rabbi under fire for ordaining female

A Bronx rabbi is being criticized by some in the Jewish community for ordaining the borough's first Orthodox female rabbi.

Avi Weiss ordained Sarah Hurwitz last March at the Hebrew Institute in Riverdale.

"We had no intention that this would be an issue that would cause a split in the community and I'm saddened by anyone who feels that way," Hurwitz says.

A national group of modern Orthodox rabbis has talked of expelling Weiss for ordaining Hurwitz.
